Residential Service Program (RSP)

The Residential Service Program is available to second-year residents. Students apply in groups of two or three with the intention of living together in Victor McCormick (VMC) Hall and completing 30 hours of service during the academic year with a specific community organization that supports people in Brown County.

The Residential Service Program applications open December 1st each year, closing in early February. Please visit the Housing Portal on the Residential Education & Housing website.

  • Lifelong impact

    The Residential Service Program will help students develop a deeper understanding of how actions in the community connect to St. Norbert College and the common good while inspiring them to adopt a lifelong commitment to service. Residents will engage in the following skill development areas:

    Live: Contribute to a positive living environment

    • Effectively resolve conflicts and solve problems at the lowest possible level
    • In the spirit of communio, develop positive, meaningful relationships with other residents
    • Choose healthy decisions and develop positive ways to manage stress

    Learn: Learn about yourself and others.

    • Evaluate the needs of individuals living in the Brown County community in order to understand and respect their experiences
    • Expand your knowledge of social justice issues in order to develop a lifelong commitment to serve the common good
    • Identify, develop, and use your gifts in order to contribute positively to the SNC campus and greater Green Bay community

    Serve: Assist community partner agency in reaching its mission and goals.

    • Articulate how an experience in your service has shifted your mindset or perspective
    • Articulate at least three positive, measurable impacts you have had in the community
    • Develop authentic, reciprocal relationships with individuals at your service site
  • Qualifications

    To participate in the Residential Service Program, all residents must meet the following qualifications:

    1. Conduct History: Residential Education and Housing will review a full conduct history of all applicants. Students on disciplinary probation at the time of the application are ineligible. In addition, students who were found responsible for violating more than one of the following behavioral policies as defined in The Citizen (student code of conduct) at any time before or during the current academic year may be ineligible to participate in the Residential Service Program and will be subject to further screening:
      • Alcohol and/or drug-related violations
      • Disruptive/disorderly behavior (to include but not limited to physical altercations, behavior which disrupts the learning environment, vandalism, harassment, etc.)
      • Non-compliance with a college official
    2. Volunteer requirements: Each resident must comply with the volunteer requirements set forth by the community partner and the program.
    3. Second-year status: All residents must have reached second-year status by the time they move in (can include semesters completed at a different institution). All members should be in good academic standing, defined in The Citizen as a cumulative grade point average above 2.0.
    4. Registered SNC Student: All individuals listed on the application must be enrolled students at St. Norbert College registered for 12 or more credits at the time of application.

    If any member of the group does not meet the above requirements, the entire group will be ineligible to participate in the Residential Service Program.

    Group Representative

    Each group must designate a representative. The representative agrees to complete the following tasks:

    • Serve as a liaison between group members and the community partner and staff of the Sturzl Center for Community Service and Learning and Residential Education and Housing (REH)
    • Encourage group members to complete service
    • Help remove obstacles and solve problems
    • Attend weekly representative meetings to develop leadership skills and share information
    • Attend training sessions, as needed
  • Expectations

    Each accepted group will be matched with a community partner in the spring semester after selection into the program. Groups that are accepted into the program are expected to complete the necessary paperwork as stated above. Residents will meet with their community partner at a Fall meeting to be held the first week of classes in the fall semester. Groups are expected to meet with their community partner throughout the school year as needed.

    Each member of the group will be required to complete a total of 30 hours of direct service at their service site per academic year. Direct service is defined as face-to-face service that actually affects the group’s service site. Service hours cannot be accumulated in one visit; they must be done throughout the year. Service hours completed at other service sites or through other SNC programs/clubs/employment will not be counted toward the required Residential Service Program commitment.

    In addition to the 30 direct service hours, students may be expected to complete a pre-service site orientation or training(s) and an orientation meeting on campus (Fall meeting). Students are also required to complete 3 social justice workshops per year. Residents will be notified of approved sessions throughout the year.

    Each group is required to participate in a reflection session each semester.

    Students must provide their own transportation to and from their group’s service site. It is important that groups discuss transportation arrangements and ensure every group member will have a way of getting to and from the service site.

Residential Themed Communities (RTC)

Residential Themed Communities allow students to purposefully define their on-campus living experience and to contribute to the greater campus community in accordance with their goals, interests and pursuits by serving in the Green Bay area community.

The application for Residential Themed Communities opens December 1st each year, closing the first Monday in February.

  • Expectations

    The RTC houses are an excellent opportunity to make the most of your residential experience at St. Norbert College. Space is limited for these communities, however, so each RTC house must meet the following expectations:

    • All members of the RTC group should be in good academic standing, defined by The Citizen as a cumulative grade point average above 2.0.
    • All members of the RTC group should be in good judicial standing with a maximum of (1) alcohol violation in the last 12 months and no illegal substance violation. Students that do not meet this requirement may be subject to further screening.
    • Members must not be on disciplinary probation at the time of application.
    • Each RTC group will regularly communicate with the Area Coordinator, the RTC Community Assistant and their community partner to update them about the group’s service.
    • Each RTC group will regularly update an online tracking sheet to report each individual's service hours.
    • Each RTC group will be responsible for following all St. Norbert College policies as stated in The Citizen.
    • Acceptance into the RTC program will remove group members from any future housing selection processes for the academic year.
    • Active participation in the RTC program is a requirement of continuing membership. If group performance should drop below an acceptable level of involvement (attending meetings and programs, scheduling and fulfilling service hours, connecting with others in the campus community) as determined by the Residential Education and Housing Department, the group or individual may be removed from the housing assignment they were originally assigned.
    • The group must maintain their eligibility status for the entire academic year. Students who lose their eligibility requirements and/or fail to meet the outlined expectations and requirements may be relocated to another campus housing location.
