  • Time is critical in situations of sexual assault. The sooner you have an assault examination by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, the more evidence it will yield. Receiving the exam within 72 hours from the assault is ideal. However, you have 120 hours/approximately five days from the time of the assault to receive one.

To preserve evidence:

  • Avoid bathing or using the toilet. Do not douche
  • Do not change clothes. If clothing has been changed, place soiled clothes in a paper bag
  • Do not rinse mouth and do not drink any liquids
  • If oral contact has occurred, one should not smoke, eat or brush teeth
