Teacher Education Major Requirements

For students who began their SNC studies before 2021-22

Teacher candidates earn a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Norbert College. The education degree aligns with one of four Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) certifications, which lead to initial licensure.

  • Early Childhood-Middle Childhood (ages birth-10)
  • Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (ages 6-13)
  • Early Adolescence-Adolescence (ages 10-21)
  • Early Childhood-Adolescence (ages birth-21)

Students who started at SNC during the 2020-21 academic year or later, consult the current program requirements and current major requirements. Students who started the SNC education program during the 2021-22 academic year or later should follow the requirements listed below.

Students seeking early childhood certification outside of Wisconsin should consult with the co-chair of teacher-education.

  • EC-MC

    Education Major with Early Childhood-Middle Childhood Certification (Ages Birth-10)

    The certification requires completion of the education major and the minor in early childhood.

    Certifications Beyond the Major
    An early childhood-middle childhood candidate may also be licensed to teach in English as a Second Language, French, German or Spanish by completing a minor and passing the associated subject-area test. Students minoring in modern foreign languages must complete an approved immersion experience in order to be licensed.     Depending on the student’s choice of minor, the Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence program may require more than 128 credits. A student may still complete all requirements for graduation and licensure within four years by enrolling in interim session(s) or overloading.

    Early Adolescence-Adolescence Certification (Ages 10-21)

    This certification requires the student to complete an academic major and certification coursework.

    Majors that are available include those in humanities: English, speech/communication, history; in social sciences: economics, political science, psychology, sociology; and in natural sciences: biology, chemistry, computer science, physics and mathematics.

    Certification options

    Broadfield Science: A broadfield science certification allows students to teach fusion (i.e. interdisciplinary) courses in the sciences, in addition to courses in the area defined by their major. Students complete at least one academic major in physics, chemistry, geology or biology, plus the introductory sequence (BIOL 120 and BIOL 121, CHEM 105 and CHEM 107, PHYS 121 and PHYS 122, or GEOL 105 and GEOL 200 or higher-level course) in the three other areas.

    Broadfield Social Studies: A broadfield social studies certification allows students to teach fusion (i.e. interdisciplinary) courses in the social sciences in addition to courses in the area defined by their major. Students complete at least one academic major in history, economics, sociology, psychology or political science, plus sequences in two social-studies areas outside their major and a single course in an additional social-studies subject area.
