The Dangers of Adventure

Mitski’s album cover for "Nothing’s About to Happen to Me"

It was a Saturday night, just like any other. Like many of my plans, it started with a text to my friend asking if she wanted to go to an event. A listening party for a new album releasing the next week was being held, but the catch was: we didn’t really know the artist. Now, like many people, you probably have heard a snippet of Mitski’s most popular song ‘My Love Mine All Mine’ (it’s usually played on romantic occasions, have a listen if you’ve never heard of it).

We went to the listening party and enjoyed listening to the album. While Mitski isn’t a part of our usual rotation, we wouldn’t be opposed to going to another listening party. The cherry on top was that we didn’t really know where the listening party was. We just knew it was at Eroding Winds in Appleton, and once I put their new address into Waze we were off.

Like I mentioned, we enjoyed the listening party. It wasn’t our first one but this one felt really relaxed compared to the other ones we’ve been to. This one was also not in Green Bay, so we were already in for a trip and a half together with the struggle to find parking while running late. But it was exciting, joyful and just an overall positive experience. I liked the adventure of going somewhere that I thought I knew, but seeing another side of it. Similar to the title of Mitski’s new album, I thought that nothing’s about to happen to me and that it would be an average listening party.

Now, I want to do this again. I want to go on another adventure to explore more, to do something new, and while I am on campus before spring break I will be trying to go on some mini adventures. There are places around campus that I’ve never been to, mostly food places. The danger of an adventure is that, as nervewrecking as it can be because you don’t know what will happen, it also makes you want to go again.

In the end, I enjoyed my weekend because of that listening party. While I wasn’t as engaged as other fans who were sketching away at the event, I got to hang out with my friend and discuss Weezer’s really bright light green album and remember Lady Gaga’s older music. We had fun and we also got free items, a picture of the album cover, a paperlike wristband and a lilac note pad, which is more than what I’ve gotten at other listening parties. We also got to try Insomnia Cookies afterwards, so it was nothing but a fun experience and I think we all need to have events like these: events where we can step away from our worries, work, relax and be with our friends.
