Many young adults are familiar with Greek Life, a combination of sororities and fraternities with national chapters on college campuses all over the nation. SNC is no stranger to Greek Life, but an exciting aspect of the college that many students enjoy is the independent social life. Social groups at SNC are independent organizations that are unique to the college. Similar to sororities and fraternities, they foster a sense of community, giving students a space to bond and participate in fun activities.
Recently, during the week of Sept. 22, all of the social groups on campus participated in recruitment week. Recruitment week is a week-long array of activities each social group has to meet new members and show off the best aspects of their groups. At the end of recruitment week, potential new members can decide which social group they feel is the best fit for them.
The week began with an annual event to meet the groups held in Boyle Hall. This night allows students to peruse all of the groups over the course of one evening and learn about the other recruitment events they will be hosting. This event is the only time of the week where all of the groups are in one place, so from that point on individuals must choose what groups interest them the most. This year, students were able to meet BUD, CCHAMS, No Nonsense, The Untouchables, The Electric Company and BIG.
Each year, recruitment becomes the talk of campus. Groups spend weeks preparing, often selecting different themes to frame their activities around. Some of the themes this year included The Parent Trap, The Wild West and Alien Invasion. A few popular activities were bracelet making, games nights and movie marathons. These events are a great way for new members to get a glimpse into each group.
With recruitment week now wrapped up, new members have chosen which groups they fit best with and officially added another organization to their growing list of activities. If you did not get to attend recruitment or were hesitant to join a group your first semester, there will be another opportunity later this year. At the beginning of spring semester there will be another week of recruitment activities, giving any remaining interested students another opportunity to join social life at SNC.
