Sept. 15, 2025 marked the 10th anniversary of the hit indie game Undertale, which was originally released in 2015. Although it took a while to gain traction, once it did, it hit the ground running and took the internet by storm. Popular content creators did playthroughs of the game, and fans created a large variety of fan art and creations.

Today, computer copies of Undertale have amounted to a rough estimate of 6.3 million copies. You may be asking yourself, what makes this game so special?

Well, it’s unique in that the game recognizes the choices you make throughout your playthrough. If you hurt an NPC, the game will remember. It will also remember if you are kind to an NPC. If you accidentally kill an NPC and try to restart the game to undo what you’ve done, the game will not forget, even though you restarted it. In short, Undertale can be described as a game that knows it’s a game. The game wants you to acknowledge the mistakes you make and push you towards a better direction. Of course, you don’t have to.

It wasn’t just this that caught the eyes of the players. No, it was the message behind the story. It was the idea that regardless of the struggles somebody faces, as long as they hold their hopes and dreams close to them, they’re capable of overcoming any obstacle. The game balances this message by incorporating ideas of nihilism and goofy humor that definitely feels like it was written in the 2010s.

For this game’s 10th anniversary, the creator, Toby Fox, has decided to do a live stream to celebrate this momentous occasion. He has also alluded to other events, as earlier in August, Toby sent out a form that anybody could fill out, which asked for people to summarize their experience with the game. By the end of the response period, roughly 400,000 people had responded to the form.

Today, Fox is still working on his true passion project, DELTARUNE, which involves a story similar to Undertale, but with an entirely different premise. With the recent release of the third and fourth chapters of DELTARUNE, fans are eagerly awaiting what else he might be working on.
