5-7-26 Nationwide Canvas Outage

Canvas is currently experiencing a nationwide outage affecting colleges and universities across the country. ITS is actively monitoring the situation.

Faculty and students are encouraged to communicate via college email regarding assignments, exams, deadlines, and other course-related updates. Students should check email regularly for course communications.

5-5-26 Nationwide Security Breach Involving Canvas

SNC Information Technology Services is aware of a nationwide security incident involving Canvas, the College’s learning management system. We are actively monitoring updates and assessing any potential impact to the College.

This is a vendor-driven, nationwide event affecting institutions across the country. At this time, SNC has not been notified of any direct impact.

According to Canvas, “While we continue actively investigating, thus far, indications are that the information involved consists of certain identifying information of users at affected institutions, such as names, email addresses, and student ID numbers, as well as messages among users. At this time, we have found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved. If that changes, we will notify any impacted institutions.”

Updates from Instructure, Canvas’ parent company, are available on their status page. Please remain alert for phishing or scam emails claiming to be related to Canvas, grades, account issues, or school communications.

ITS will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.

    On May 1, 2026, Canvas confirmed a security incident noting the situation was contained. Canvas has not named specific partners that have been impacted by the cybersecurity incident.

  • Was my data exposed?

    According to Canvas, indications are that the information that may have been compromised consists of certain identifying information of users at affected institutions, such as names, email addresses, and student ID numbers, as well as messages among users. At this time, Canvas has found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved. If that changes, Canvas will notify any impacted institutions.

    At the moment, SNC has not been notified of any direct impact.

  • What is Canvas doing about the situation?

    According to its website, Instructure, Canvas’ parent company says, “We are actively investigating this incident with the help of outside forensics experts. We are working quickly to understand the extent of the incident and actively taking steps to minimize its impact. Maintaining your trust is our highest priority, and we are committed to transparency throughout this process. We will provide new information as it is confirmed.”

  • What can I do right now?

    • At this moment in the investigation, SNC ITS recommends students, faculty, and staff:
    • Be alert for phishing or scam emails claiming to be related to Canvas, grades, account issues, or school communications
    • Avoid clicking links or opening attachments in unexpected messages
    • Never share your passwords or authentication codes
    • Report suspicious emails or activity to the IT Service Desk: servicedesk@snc.edu or 403-4040
  • How will I find out about updates?

    Any updates relevant to students, faculty, and staff will be communicated as they become available through email and/or the ITS website.
