Fifteen years ago, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Nicholas Kristof co-authored, with Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a landmark book that exposed how the oppression of women and girls is one of the greatest moral challenges of our time—and how grassroots movements around the world are creating change. The book inspired readers to see women’s rights as human rights and sparked global conversations about forced prostitution, genital mutilation, and access to education. In this Miller Lecture, Kristof looks back at Half the Sky and explores what has changed since its publication in 2009. Where have we seen progress? Where do setbacks still persist? Join us for an evening of reflection, storytelling, and hope for the future of women and girls worldwide.
This event, hosted by the Norman Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding, is this year’s Norman and Louis Miller Lecture in Public Understanding. Established in 1993 by the Norman Miller Family Foundation, this series promotes unity, communication and tolerance among different cultures, religions, ethnicities and traditions.
