On-Campus Employment

F-1 Students

  • No prior authorization is required to work on campus.
  • Employment must comply with federal regulations and SNC policies.
  • You may apply for a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) only after securing employment.

J-1 Students

  • Authorization from the CGE is required before starting work.
  • Upon approval, the CGE will issue an employment authorization letter for your employer.
  • Authorization is valid for up to 12 months or until the end of your DS-2019, whichever comes first.
  • A new request is required if you change employers.

Hours

  • Fall & Spring Semesters: Maximum 20 hours per week
  • Official Breaks (winter, spring, summer): 40 hours per week permitted

Start and End Dates

  • Employment may begin only after your SNC I-20 or DS-2019 is issued.
  • You may begin on-campus employment no more than 30 days before the first day of classes.
  • On-campus employment must end by your program date on your I-20 or DS-2019.
