The Green Knight women’s hockey team took on the Marian Sabres at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 7, 2023. The matchup took place at Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The Green Knights went on to shutout the Sabres 5-0.
The Green Knights won the face off and pulled ahead early when Alexa Morrow (‘24) scored a goal two minutes and four seconds into the first period. Morrow was assisted by Abbie Tollefson (24’) and Grace Wittkopf (26’). Although no more scoring would occur in the first period, the Green Knights controlled the puck. The Green Knights had 16 shots in the first period compared to the Sabres’ three.
To start the second period, both teams controlled the puck evenly. Seven minutes and eight seconds into the period, the Green Knights started power play when Marian’s Carlya Sato got a penalty for hooking. The Green Knights took advantage of their extra member on the rink and scored a goal 41 seconds later. The goal was scored by Natalie Hogan (‘25) who was assisted by her sister Courtnie Hogan (‘25) and Jo Mahlum (‘26). The Green Knights were not done. They continued to control the puck and scored another goal 17 minutes and 35 seconds into the period. This time it was Lexi Bonfe (‘25) with the goal and Morgan Olson (’24) and Kelsey Ross (‘25) with the assist. The Green Knights finished up the period with a 3-0 lead.
Despite their lead, the Green Knights never let up. To start the third and final period, they won the face off once again and continued to outshoot the Sabres. Four minutes and 36 seconds into the period, Bonfe scored another goal for the Green Knights. She was assisted by Ava Anick (‘27). This allowed the Green Knights to gain a comfortable 4-0 lead, and the Sabres were unable to apply any pressure. In fact, the Green Knights scored a final goal with less than two minutes left in the period. Ross scored the goal with assistance from Bonfe and Olson.
In total, the Green Knight offense outshot the Sabres 50 to 18, and Green Knight goalkeeper Ashley Ommen (‘25) kept the Sabres scoreless. With this win, the Green Knights improved their overall record to 4-1-0. The Green Knights returned to practice in preparation for their next game against Trine University on Friday Nov. 10, 2023.
