April 7 through April 13 is National Library Appreciation Week throughout the United States. This annual celebration highlights the importance of libraries in the community and celebrates the hard work and dedication of librarians and library workers in strengthening said community. Each day will highlight the importance of reading and the importance of library workers.
Monday, April 8: Right to Read Day
To kick off Library Appreciation Week is the Right to Read Day. Books are constantly being banned across the United States, and this day is for readers to fight for and defend their freedom to read whatever book they choose, banned or not.
Tuesday, April 9: National Library Workers Day
This day recognizes and celebrates the amazing library workers across the nation by showing them how much we appreciate all their hard work. On this day, go up to one of your librarians or library workers and show them how much you appreciate them. Thank them for all of their hard work, or simply take the time to have a conversation with them.
Wednesday, April 10: National Library Outreach Day
Formerly known as National Bookmobile Day, this day honors the library workers who bring the joy of reading to those outside of the library walls. Not everyone has the time to physically stop by the library to search for a book to read, which is why library apps and special pop-up services are created. But these events take a lot of time and effort, which is why on April 10 we celebrate the people who make it possible to access books outside of the library.
Thursday, April 11: Take Action for Libraries Day
Every year the costs of library funding are being cut more and more, especially as technology advances and people read less. On this day, librarians and community members are highly encouraged to unite and show government officials on all levels that reading is still fundamental, and that libraries need the funding that the government is trying to take away from them so that they can pay their staff and provide more opportunities for reading.
If you like to read or just enjoy the calm atmosphere of a library, you should celebrate National Library Appreciation Week. Visit www.ilovelibraries.org to learn more about each specific day And the next time you are in the library, do not forget to thank the amazing workers!
