The Green Knight Men’s Hockey team took on the Trine University Thunder at 7:05 p.m. on Feb. 24, 2024. The matchup took place at Cornerstone Community Center in De Pere, Wis. After going into overtime, the Green Knights won 4-3 and advanced to the championship of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs.
The Green Knights got on the board first in the first period. After going into power-play, T.J. Koufis (‘26) scored a goal eight minutes and 54 seconds into the period. Koufis was assisted by Brock Baker (‘25) and Will Stromp (‘24). The Thunder went into power-play and had a chance to score at the end of the period, but the Green Knights were able to hold them off. The first period finished out with the Green Knights leading 1-0.
The beginning of the second period was full of scoring from both teams. The Thunder wasted no time putting points on the board and scored a goal just 33 seconds into the period. They then scored another goal five minutes later, putting them up 2-1. Green Knight’s Braden Lindstom (‘26) answered, however, with a goal of his own eight minutes and 14 seconds into the period. After that, there was no more scoring from either team, and the second period finished out with a 2-2 tie.
To start the third period, it was the Green Knights who got on the board first with an early score. Just 53 seconds into the period, Logan Dombrowsky (‘27) scored a goal assisted by Adam Stacho (‘24) and Liam Fraser (‘25). The Green Knights maintained their one-point lead until 8 minutes and 59 seconds into the period when the Thunder answered. Neither team was able to score, and the third period finished in a 3-3 tie.
The game went into overtime, but the Green Knights prevailed when Fraser made the game-winning goal two minutes and 57 seconds into overtime. Fraser was assisted by Dayton Deics (‘26). Overall, it was a competitive game for both teams. The Green Knights outshot Trine 36-24, and Green Knight goalie Hunter Garvey (‘27) made 21 saves.
With this win, the Green Knights advanced to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Championship and will travel to face off against Adrian College on Saturday March 2, 2024.
