The Green Knights Women’s Volleyball team faced off against the Rockford Regents at noon on Saturday Oct. 7, 2023. The conference matchup took place at the Seaver Center in Rockford, Illinois. The Green Knights went on to sweep the Regents, winning the first set 25-13, the second set 25-17, and the third set 25-19.
The Green Knights took an early lead in the first set. With Rockford up 2-1, the Green Knights battled back and won six points in a row, putting them up 7-2 with a comfortable lead. After that, the Green Knights never looked back. They kept the lead for the rest of the set and even expanded it to nine points later in the set. Brooke Clement (‘24) and Rylie Gregg (‘25) each had four kills to lead the Green Knights. Setter Ellie Hartson (‘24) recorded nine assists. Erin Eggers (‘24), the team’s libero, reached a huge milestone in her career. After collecting 12 digs in set one, she surpassed 1000 career digs.
To begin set two, the Green Knights scored nine points in a row to put them up 9-0. The Green Knights maintained this comfortable lead for most of the set. Rockford did battle back and collect four points in a row to make the score as close as 18-15, but the Green Knights prevailed. Clement was an offensive powerhouse in this set, collecting eight kills. Setter Heidi Colburn (‘26) had the most assists in this set with a total of eight. Kara Sowinski (‘26) and Eggers each tallied five digs.
In the third set, it was Rockford that got ahead first. The start of the set was full of back-and-forth scoring, but the Regents maintained a slight lead until about halfway through the set. The Green Knights went down by four points but battled back and scored seven in a row to put them up 13-10. After that, the Green Knights kept the lead for the rest of the set. Alyssa Mills (‘25) led the Green Knight offense in this set with four kills. Hartson recorded six assists, and Colburn recorded five. Eggers added six more digs in this set.
In the total match, the Green Knights had 42 kills compared to Rockford’s 26. Clement led the team with 14 kills. The Green Knights had 10 blocks compared to Rockford’s five. Alli Clark (‘27) and Clement led the team with three blocks each. The Green Knights had 40 assists compared to Rockford’s 26. Hartson had the most assists with a total of 20. Finally, the Green Knights had 55 digs compared to Rockford’s 48. Eggers collected 23 digs between the three sets to lead the team.
The results of this match gave the Green Knights a 4-2 conference record and a ranking of fifth in the conference. The Green Knights returned to practice in preparation for their next match against conference opponent Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday Oct. 11, 2023.
