The Green Knight Football team took on the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday October 21, 2023. The conference matchup took place at Tomasini Stadium in Mequon, Wisconsin. The Green Knights emerged victorious, winning 13-7 in overtime and handing the Falcons their first conference loss of the season.
The first quarter set the pace for a slow offensive game with both teams failing to earn a first down in their opening drives. The Green Knights only managed seven yards in three plays, and the Falcons went four yards in three plays. Disaster struck for the Green Knights, however, when a blocked punt and fumble was recovered by the Falcons, giving the Falcons another possession and another chance to score. The Falcons capitalized on this opportunity, bringing the ball 58 yards down the field to score the first touchdown of the game. The extra point was good, putting the Falcons up 7-0 halfway through the first quarter. The quarter finished out without any additional scoring.
The second quarter opened up with a short, scoreless drive by the Falcons, and then it was the Green Knights’ time to score. A short punt by the Falcons’ kicker gave the Green Knights great field position, only needing to go 45 yards to score a touchdown. The Green Knights got the job done on foot, with most of their gains in yardage coming from running back Delton Zuleger (‘24). Zuleger also scored a touchdown. Dalton Moyse’s (‘26) extra point attempt was good, and the score was tied 7-7. Once again, the quarter finished without any additional scoring
The Falcons got the ball to start the third quarter, but after seven plays, they would only progress 13 yards. Then, the Green Knights got the ball and brought it 56 yards down the field in a drive that lasted eight minutes and 19 seconds. Unfortunately, a missed field goal attempt left the Green Knights with nothing to show for it. To end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter, the Falcons did the exact same thing. The Falcons managed to bring the ball 69 yards down the field and only ten yards away from the endzone, but a missed field goal attempt also left them with nothing to show for it. The score remained tied 7-7.
The fourth quarter was full of short drives by each team with neither team making any strides on offense. A fumble by the Green Knights gave the Falcons possession of the ball only 12 yards away from a touchdown, but the Green Knights were saved when Alex Campbell (24’) made an interception. Neither team was able to score by the end of the quarter, so the game went into overtime.
The Falcons had the first opportunity to score in overtime, but the Green Knight defense prevented that from happening. In fact, the Falcons actually lost five yards during their possession. Then, the Green Knights got their opportunity to score. A big 15-yard rush from Zuleger got the Green Knights one yard away from the endzone. Despite a five-yard setback on a false start penalty, the Green Knights managed to score on a quarterback sneak by Peyton Lyon (26’).
The results of this game would give the Green Knights a 4-2 conference record and a ranking of third in the conference. The Green Knights returned to practice in preparation for their next game against conference opponent Concordia Chicago on Saturday Oct. 28, 2023.
