Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are there any scholarships available?

a. The eligibility for each person differs. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid to learn more.

2. Do I need a high GPA to study abroad?

a. You only need a GPA of 2.5 to be eligible to study abroad. However, you must have completed two consecutive semesters enrolled at SNC and must not be on academic probation.

3. Do I need to understand the language to study abroad?

a. No, you do not need to understand the language to study abroad. Most countries can speak English proficiently (not everyone) and there will be courses offered in English.

4. What documents do I need to study abroad? Passport? Visa?

a. A passport is REQUIRED to study abroad; you cannot leave the country without one. Every country will require a Visa or equivalent, such as an ETA if you’re planning on studying in the UK.

5. How much does it cost to study abroad?

a. For non-exchange programs tuition and costs vary from program to program. You can find budget sheets for each program in the study abroad application portal. Tuition for semester exchange programs will be charged at the current SNC rate, and you will be able to apply your full financial aid package. If housing and/or meal plans are included in your exchange program, those will also be charged at SNC rates.

6. How do I apply to study abroad?

a. You can begin by signing into the Study Abroad Student Portal (VIA), and after choosing a program, you can start the application process through the portal.

7. How does accommodation work?

a. Accommodation differs from program to program but most often you’ll have options between living on or off-campus and what type of accommodation you want such as dorms, flats, apartments, etc. Costs vary from program to program, unless they’re included in an exchange program in which case you will pay the SNC rate.

8. When should I begin to look for a plane ticket?

a. Generally, 1-2 months before your program starts you will know what your accommodation is, and when the earliest time is that you can move in, this way you can better plan your arrival and start looking for plane tickets. Be careful not to leave it too late as prices will spike the closer the departure date is.

9. When are the application deadlines?

a. In the study abroad portal, when you’re filling out your application for the program it will give you the general deadlines for the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer programs. You will likely have to submit another application directly to the school that hosts your program of choice. This also varies from program to program but to give an example, when applying to the school that hosts your chosen program during the spring semester, you’ll likely have to have the application submitted around October or November.

10. How will I get credit for my courses? How will I know if they transfer back to SNC?

a. SNC has a range of preapproved courses for most programs, which are courses that have already been approved by the registrar and have an SNC equivalent that you will get credit for. You can also select different courses offered by the host school, find an equivalent class at SNC, and ask the registrar to review and approve it. This way, the host program's class will transfer back to SNC as the equivalent class, and you will get credit for completing it. However, the registrar is not guaranteed to approve the class.
